Music and Traditions

Music in my life has always been a part of me. From when I was younger, I always remembered most of the songs I would listen to together with my parents as well. Those memories, in my opinion, make music a work of art. Music always and no matter what, brings us closer than ever, especially with building connections with others too. But music in total always held memories and different feelings with my family and me.

I remember when I was around probably 5 years old at the time, going to kindergarten. I would be in the car with my mom in the mornings. Even just thinking about it, I could still smell my mom's warm coffee, as well as the buttered toast, as we were driving in the dark, foggy mornings. I would be in the back seat of the car, and the only thing I would hear would be the music from my mom's playlist in the car. Some I could remember my mom playing in the car were "Dreaming with a Broken Heart" by John Mayer, "Low" by Flo Rida, and "Just the Way You Are" by Bruno Mars. A lot of these songs I found out to be relaxing, and bring me back to that time where I would be on these early drives to school, every single day. I would still listen to some of those songs to this day, sometimes, whenever I feel down or I just miss what it was like back at home.

During the Summer, our family would all go out to the lake and ride our boat around all day. We would go tubing, swim at coves, or just ride around, going on rough waves. There were many songs, but I could only remember one of them that we would always listen to as the sun set, as we slowly rode back to the dock. One song I could remember was "Night Moves" by Bob Seger. Whenever I hear that song, I always think about the times when we would anchor our boat and tubes out and swim out in the lake and have fun. No matter what, this would bring me back to the times when my family and I would all be together and relax in the nice warm summers of Georgia. But no matter what, that song would always be a part of me.

Even though we never do these traditions of listening to the same music for car rides, or going out to the lake and listening to music on hot summer days, these pieces of music are still stuck with me to this day, and I will always cherish them for as long as I can remember. Thank you so much for looking at this blog, and hope you enjoyed it!

  1. Hey Mason I liked your post. It’s cool how you talked about music being more than just something to listen to it connects to memories and emotions. I feel the same way. Some songs really stick with me and help me through stuff. Music definitely means a lot.

  2. Yesss!! Bruno Mars is gen z old school. One of my favorites from that time (or maybe a little earlier) is love the way you lie with Eminem and Riri. To be honest I totally feel you when you said music shared between you and your parents is extra special. Something about those mornings when my mom would drop me off at school and we listened to music together is a ceremony of its own. Thanks for sharing!!

  4. Wassup Mason, Bruno Mars is definitely a great artist I know a few of his songs, and this one in particular is a good choice. I haven’t had him in my playlist for a while, but you definitely reminded me how good he music is. I’ll have to add him back in.
